What Equipment Do You Need for a Virtual Show?

The Non-Negotiables

Before we talk gear, here is the honest truth: audio quality matters more than video quality.

Fans will forgive a slightly grainy image. They will not tolerate bad audio. If your voice sounds tinny, echoey, or distorted, fans will disconnect within the first minute regardless of how good the visuals are. Prioritize your microphone and audio setup above everything else.

---

Camera

Beginner (Free): Your smartphone. A modern iPhone or Android shoots in 4K and performs well in decent lighting. Use a tripod to keep it steady and make sure it is plugged in so the battery does not die mid-show.

Mid-Range ($80 to $200): A dedicated webcam like the Logitech C920 or C922. These mount to your monitor or a tripod and deliver consistent 1080p quality with minimal setup.

Pro ($400 and up): A mirrorless camera like the Sony ZV-E10 or Canon M50 connected to your computer via USB or a capture card (Elgato Cam Link is the standard). This gives you the shallow depth-of-field and cinematic image quality that makes a show look truly high-end.

---

Microphone

Beginner ($50 to $100): A USB condenser microphone. The Blue Yeti and the Audio-Technica AT2020 USB are both reliable, widely used, and dramatically better than any built-in laptop or phone microphone. Plug in, position correctly, and you are ready.

Mid-Range ($100 to $300): An XLR condenser microphone paired with a basic audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett Solo. This setup gives you more control over your gain and audio quality and is the standard for most home studios.

Pro ($300 and up): A high-end XLR microphone (Shure SM7B, Rode NT1, AKG C414) paired with a quality audio interface. This is broadcast quality and will make your voice sound like you are in a professional studio.

For musicians: If you are performing with instruments, route everything through your audio interface. Use direct inputs for guitars and keyboards, and mic your amp or acoustic instrument with a dedicated mic.

---

Lighting

Beginner ($25 to $60): A single ring light placed directly in front of you. This eliminates unflattering shadows and gives your face an even, warm glow. The difference between a ring light and no extra lighting is dramatic.

Mid-Range ($80 to $200): Two softbox lights β€” one as your key light positioned at a 45-degree angle to your face, one as a fill light on the opposite side to soften shadows. This is the classic two-point lighting setup used in most professional video production.

Pro ($200 and up): Add a third light behind you as a backlight to separate you from your background and create depth. You can also use LED panel lights with adjustable color temperature for more control over the mood and tone of your show.

Pro tip: Natural light from a window can be beautiful β€” but only if you can control it. Sunlight changes throughout the day and can go from perfect to unusable within minutes. Artificial lighting is more consistent and reliable for a scheduled show.

Internet Connection

This is non-negotiable at every budget level: use a wired ethernet connection if at all possible.

WiFi is convenient but inherently less stable than a direct cable connection. A dropped frame or a buffering stream in the middle of your best song is the kind of experience fans remember for the wrong reasons.

If ethernet is not possible, make sure you are on a 5GHz WiFi band, as close to your router as possible, and that no one else on your network is streaming, gaming, or downloading large files during your show.

A minimum upload speed of 10 Mbps is recommended for a stable HD stream. Test your connection at fast.com or speedtest.net before every show.

Backdrop and Environment

Your background tells your audience something about you before you play a single note.

Simple options that work:

  • A dark fabric or curtain for a clean, professional look
  • A well-organized, well-lit room that reflects your aesthetic
  • A branded banner or custom backdrop with your name or logo
  • Fairy lights or LED strips for atmosphere and personality

What to avoid:

  • Cluttered, messy backgrounds
  • Bright windows directly behind you (this creates a silhouette effect and kills your lighting)
  • Distracting or unintentional elements in the frame

Walk through the full frame of your camera before every show. Look at what your fans will see. Make sure everything in the shot is intentional.

---

Audio Monitoring

Headphones are essential during a virtual show. They allow you to hear your own audio mix in real time and catch any issues before they become a problem for your audience.

A basic pair of over-ear studio headphones ($50 to $150) is all you need. Avoid earbuds during the show β€” they are more likely to create feedback issues and are less reliable for monitoring.

The Full Beginner Setup (Under $200 Total)

  • Smartphone on a tripod: $0 to $25 for the tripod
  • Blue Yeti USB microphone: $100
  • Ring light: $30 to $50
  • Wired ethernet adapter (if needed): $15 to $25
  • Dark fabric backdrop: $20 to $30

Total: approximately $165 to $200

This setup will produce a show that looks and sounds professional. It is more than enough to deliver a great fan experience and grow from there.

Your Gear Will Only Get Better

Every show you host teaches you something about your setup. You will notice what works, what needs improvement, and where to invest next. The performers with the best home studios did not build them overnight. They built them show by show.

Start with what you have. Level up as you grow.

The Stage handles everything else β€” the ticketing, the fan experience, the payment. You just need to show up and perform.
